MEME69 index methodology.

The complete rulebook for the index: how assets qualify, how the 69 are chosen and weighted, how every published statistic is calculated, and how data gaps and failures are handled. The methodology is deterministic; given the same inputs, anyone can reproduce every number on the site.

Overview

What MEME69 measures and the parameters that define it.

MEME69 is a rules-based, free-float market-capitalisation-weighted benchmark of the 69 largest memecoins native to Solana. It is designed to answer one question precisely: how is capital allocated across the Solana memecoin market right now, and how has that allocation moved over the trailing week. The index is fully transparent; every figure on this site can be reproduced from the rules in this document and the public data sources in Section 6.

Section 2

Universe & eligibility

The pool of assets a constituent may be drawn from.

The eligible universe is drawn from CoinGecko's Solana Meme Coins category. On every refresh the top 150 assets in that category by market capitalisation are retrieved and screened against the following rules in order. An asset that fails any rule is excluded from that refresh.

2.1

Native to Solana. The asset must have a Solana contract address on CoinGecko and Solana must be its primary platform, defined as the first chain in its platform list. Assets whose home chain is elsewhere and that merely have a bridged or wrapped Solana mint are excluded.

2.2

Unique mint. Assets are identified by their Solana mint address. If two CoinGecko listings resolve to the same mint, only the higher-ranked listing is retained.

2.3

Reported market capitalisation. The asset must have a positive circulating market capitalisation reported by CoinGecko. Assets with an unknown or zero circulating supply are excluded even if a fully diluted valuation is available.

2.4

Category membership. Membership of the category is determined by CoinGecko. The index administrator does not add or remove assets manually.

Section 3

Selection & ranking

How the 69 constituents are chosen from the eligible universe.

3.1

The 69 eligible assets with the highest circulating market capitalisation form the index. Constituents are ranked 1 to 69 in descending order of market capitalisation; rank 1 is the largest.

3.2

There is no buffer band, minimum tenure or notice period. When an asset's market capitalisation falls below that of the 69th constituent, it exits on the next refresh and the highest-ranked non-constituent takes its place. Turnover is therefore continuous rather than scheduled.

3.3

The entry threshold is the market capitalisation of the current 69th constituent. It is published in the Index and Analytics sections.

3.4

Ties in market capitalisation are broken by CoinGecko's own ordering at retrieval time.

Section 4

Weighting

How index capital is apportioned across constituents.

Each constituent's weight is its market capitalisation divided by the aggregate market capitalisation of all 69 constituents. Weights are recomputed on every refresh and are not capped, floored or smoothed; the index is intended to reflect the market's actual concentration rather than a diversified portfolio.

4.1 Constituent weight
w_i = MC_i / Σ_{j=1..69} MC_j

Where MC_i is the circulating market capitalisation of constituent i in USD. Weights sum to 1 by construction. The equal-weight reference series described in Section 5.4 assigns w_i = 1/69 to every constituent and is published for comparison only; it does not define the index.

Section 5

Index calculation

Spot statistics, the hourly level series and derived risk measures.

5.1 Spot aggregates

Index market capitalisation is the sum of constituent market capitalisations. Index 24h volume is the sum of constituent 24h volumes. Index liquidity is the sum of aggregate on-chain DEX liquidity across constituents for which DexScreener returns data (see Section 6).

5.2 Cap-weighted return over a window
R(h) = Σ w_i · r_i(h) for h ∈ {1h, 24h, 7d}

r_i(h)is the constituent's percentage price change over the window as reported by CoinGecko. Constituents with a missing change for that window are dropped and the remaining weights are renormalised so they sum to 1.

5.3 Hourly index level, trailing 7 days
L(t) = 1000 · Σ w_i · P_i(t) / P_i(t0)
P_i(t) is the hourly sparkline price and t0 the first hour of the window (168 hours). Because current weights are applied across the whole window, the series describes how the present basket would have performed. It is not chain-linked across reconstitutions and should not be read as a historical total-return index.
5.4 Reference series
L_EW(t) = 1000 · (1/N) · Σ P_i(t) / P_i(t0) L_exTop(t) = 1000 · Σ_{i≠1} w_i' · P_i(t) / P_i(t0), w_i' = w_i / Σ_{j≠1} w_j
Both reference series share the same base and window as L(t). The ex-top series isolates concentration risk by removing the rank-1 constituent and renormalising the remaining weights.
5.5 Drawdown
DD(t) = ( L(t) − max_{s≤t} L(s) ) / max_{s≤t} L(s)
5.6 Realised volatility (annualised)
σ_ann = stdev( ln L(t) − ln L(t−1) ) · √8760
Computed from hourly log returns across the 7-day window with a sample standard deviation; 8,760 is the number of hours in a year. Reported as a percentage.

5.7 Breadth

Advancers and decliners count constituents with a positive or negative 24h change respectively. The 24h return distribution shown in Analytics buckets each constituent's change into fixed bands and reports the median alongside the cap-weighted figure; a gap between the two indicates that large caps and small caps are moving differently.

Section 6

Concentration metrics

How dominance and dispersion of capital are measured.

6.1 Dominance
Top-k share = Σ_{i≤k} w_i for k ∈ {1, 5, 10}
6.2 Herfindahl–Hirschman Index
HHI = Σ (100 · w_i)²
Weights are expressed in percentage points before squaring, so HHI ranges from 10,000/69 ≈ 145 (perfectly equal) to 10,000 (a single constituent holds everything). Following the convention used in competition analysis, values above 2,500 are described as highly concentrated and values between 1,500 and 2,500 as moderately concentrated.
6.3 Effective number of constituents
N_eff = 10000 / HHI
The number of equally weighted assets that would produce the same HHI. An index of 69 names with an effective N of 8 behaves, in concentration terms, like an 8-asset basket.

The concentration curve in Analytics plots cumulative weight against rank. The ranks at which it crosses 50% and 90% are reported as the number of constituents needed to account for half and nine-tenths of index capital. The straight diagonal is the equal-weight reference.

Section 7

Data sources

Where every field originates and how it is used.

Two public data providers are used. CoinGecko is authoritative for constituent selection, ranking and weighting; DexScreener is supplementary and enriches constituents with on-chain DEX detail. The index remains fully defined if DexScreener is unavailable.

Section 8

Refresh, caching & failure handling

How often data moves and what happens when a source fails.

ComponentCadenceBehaviour on failure
Market data (CoinGecko)Revalidated every 60sLast good snapshot is served until the next success
DEX data (DexScreener)Revalidated every 60sFields show as unavailable; ranking unaffected
Platform mapEvery 24hPrevious map retained
Token price chartsEvery 5 minutesChart shows an unavailable state
Client pollingEvery 60sDisplays the server's latest snapshot

Values are never interpolated, estimated or fabricated. If an upstream source omits a field for a constituent, the interface renders an unavailable marker (—) for that field and any aggregate that depends on it excludes that constituent with weights renormalised.

Section 9

Treatment of edge cases

Deterministic handling of gaps, new listings and data revisions.

9.1

Recent listings. A constituent with fewer than 168 hourly sparkline points is held flat at its first observed price for the hours before listing. This keeps the level series a full seven days long and means a new entrant contributes zero return before it existed. Constituents with fewer than 24 points or a non-positive first price are excluded from the level series (but not from the index) until sufficient history accrues.

9.2

Gaps. A missing hourly price inside a sparkline is carried forward from the previous available hour.

9.3

Supply revisions. Circulating supply for memecoins is frequently revised by the data provider. A revision changes market capitalisation and therefore rank and weight at the next refresh. No adjustment factor is applied.

9.4

Timestamps. Hourly points are anchored to the top of the last completed hour in UTC rather than to the refresh time, so the series does not drift between refreshes.

9.5

Delisting. If CoinGecko removes an asset from the category or it fails rule 2.3, it exits at the next refresh exactly as if it had fallen below the threshold.

Section 10

Limitations & disclaimer

What the index does not do.

Category membership, circulating supply and market capitalisation are determined by CoinGecko and may lag the market or exclude very new launches. The level series applies current weights across the trailing window and is not a chain-linked historical return. Market data is provided as-is by third parties and may be delayed or incorrect. MEME69 is published for information only; it is not an investment product, is not investable through this site, and nothing here constitutes investment advice or a recommendation.
